World Tourism Day: a celebration of international integration and peace
World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27. September, since 1980. The day was initiated by the General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which celebrated the 27th of September as the World Tourism Day. The UNWTO adopted its Statutes on 27 September 1970. This date was not chosen by chance, as it coincides symbolically with the end of the main tourist season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the tourist season in the southern hemisphere. World Tourism Day aims to raise awareness of the important impact that tourism has on the international community, highlighting its role in strengthening social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
This year’s theme: tourism and peace
This year’s World Tourism Day will be celebrated under the theme Tourism and Peace. Tourism has a tremendous power to bridge cultural and social divides by bringing people from different countries together and promoting international understanding and cooperation. Visiting different countries and learning about foreign cultures, customs and languages contributes to greater mutual tolerance and acceptance. It also encourages us to better understand our own identity and local environment.
Tourism not only strengthens economic links, it is also a tool for promoting peace. The international contacts that tourism facilitates create opportunities for the exchange of ideas, cultural enrichment and cooperation between different peoples. This is why the theme of this year’s celebration is particularly relevant at a time when the world needs greater cohesion and understanding between people.
Celebrating World Tourism Day in Grosuplje
Grosuplje will also celebrate World Tourism Day with a special event. In the spirit of this year’s motto, we have decided to give visitors a free tour of the town. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Grosuplje’s history and the attractions our town has to offer. During the tour, they will be able to discover many local features that enrich the cultural heritage of Grosuplje and the wider surrounding area. In addition, visitors can receive a free postcard with Grosuplje motifs at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC), 15 Adamičeva cesta, during this week. Create a personal message and send it to your friends. A little surprise awaits the youngest ones.

With this event, we want to encourage locals and visitors alike to explore our place, which proudly bears the slogan Create memories on the green doorstep of the capital. The celebration of World Tourism Day is a great opportunity to remember how important tourism is for our community and for the whole world. It allows us to be more open to other cultures, to overcome prejudices and to work together to build a more peaceful and cohesive world.
Let this year be the 27th. September, we take time to explore our home environment and reflect on how small steps can contribute to better international understanding and lasting peace.
