Museum of Beekeeping Cultural Heritage
Located in the settlement of Šmarje – Sap, this museum showcases an extensive collection of beekeeping literature from 1700 to the present. It highlights prominent figures in Slovenian beekeeping, bee traders, and hive panels. The rich collection includes various types of beehives, different kinds of honey extractors, beekeeping tools, and accessories used by ancestors in the past.
The Koželj family has been involved in beekeeping for over three decades. They maintain beehives at permanent locations across several stands in the Dolenjska and Suha krajina regions. Here, they primarily produce mixed, floral, and forest honey, and in favorable seasons, chestnut honey as well. In addition to honey, they produce pollen, propolis, royal jelly, and beeswax. The Koželj family manages around 600 hives of various types, continuing their more than three-decade-long beekeeping tradition.
