Slovenia joined the European walking routes network in 1975, initiated by Austrian foresters. The Slovenian part of the E-6, stretching from the Drava River to the Adriatic Sea, was renamed in memory of forestry engineer Milan Ciglar after his death.
Ciglar, a great nature enthusiast and an advocate for establishing educational forest trails in Slovenia, played a key role in this initiative. Initially, the trail was planned from Radlje to Kastav above Rijeka, but today it extends to the Slovenian Adriatic coast in two variants. One route takes hikers from Snežnik Castle to Mašun and over Veliki Snežnik to Strunjan, while the other bypasses Veliki Snežnik.
The route features 39 checkpoints with stamps and is marked with yellow and red signs.
